New concept of refereeing

An analysis of the games in Argentina proved that the referee's personality focuses on:

  • Total Emotional Control
    • The referee has to maintain the moderator's position by employing a higher level of concentration and reasoning during the most intense moments of the game.  Objectivity, above all, is the motif that has to exist throughout the 90+ minutes of game.
  • Timing the Call
    • Accidental (i.e., without intention) collision is to be observed as such and not sanctioned, allowing for the continuation of the game, etc.  Brutal attacks, evidently, are to be sanctioned accordingly (as we have seen during the tournament).
  • Ability to make the right decisions in time and space within the most sensitive moments of the game
    • The fluency of the game is given by the referees ability to call the advantage and offsides called at the right times.  The referee, as the moderator of the game, has to direct the play and players, controlling behavior and situations with skill and anticipation.
